15th of March

This is a summary of Front-end Forum held on Wednesday the 15th of March, 2023.

Forum summary

This time the forum gathered about 22 persons physically in Samhandlingssonen, and 8 on Teams. This is a record attendence for the re-branded Front-end Forum. Thanks for showing up, do spread the knowledge and the word about Front-end Forum.

Topics that we covered during this session were:

4th floor!

We keep on gathering on the 4th floor of our main office in Oslo. This will be the new venue until at least after the summer.

  • Version 2.0.0 of Core 30 components released last week.
    • Table is now released.
    • Breaking changes in how Icons work. Color and Size props are removed, icons now inherit color!
    • Multiple contributions from other teams, really appreciated! We have everything from bug fixes to improvements.
    • Remember their board that shows what is worked on.
    • There's some new components being worked on until Core reaches "complete NCI"-status.

After this short dive, I handed over the mic to a new member of Team Builder's, the brilliant Eirik. He agreed to re-run a very interesting talk he had a while back.

  • Browser performance deep dive, still relevant for all browsers.
  • Learning frameworks have led many developers forget how the browser works and how it renders and paints pages, a vital knowledge when working with performance.
  • Using the wrong type of CSS like animating margins can cause the page to repaint itself multiple times, while using layer-specific animations, like opacity and transform is super fast.
  • If you want to dive deeper here, or refresh some of the things, the internet is full of resources on the subject.
